The ‘ifs’ of Book Collecting...
The first image that I see every morning when I
wake up is the one of my library. The books are
carefully arranged, sitting quietly on the shelves,
and they all serve as a testimony to my thirst of
knowledge. In addition, if you are anything like me,
then you also know what it feels like to be a book
collector. Every book seems to emulate a special
prize and holds incredible value, enchanting both
the eye and the soul of the owner. It does not
matter whether you consider yourself a book
collector or not. If you find yourself enjoying
reading books as well as collecting, adding each
book to your home library, you can be certain that
you, at least on some level, a book collector.
Book collecting has brought immense pleasure and
comfort for many people; it has opened new
dimensions for them and offered the greatest
diversity of knowledge. Books are both beautiful and
delightful, containing the very essence of the human
spirit and everyone that has a wonderful home
library knows that. Scientists say that there are
certain persons who are more prone towards book
collecting than others are, taking care after their
books just like other valuable things they possess.
Book collectors usually tend to concentrate on books
that they can use in their profession, building
unbelievable office or home libraries. We all know
that feeling of seeing our books beautifully
arranged, sitting on the shelves and I completely
agree with those who say that books enrich our
condition as humans.
There are two important aspects that every book
collector takes into consideration. The first is the
condition of the book, being more than obvious that
collectors are deeply interested in well kept books.
They especially prize first editions, not only from
the economical standpoint of view but also of the
emotional rewards brought by a library filled with
first edition books. As was already mentioned, the
edition is the second important aspect for any book
collectors that values books more than anything
else. There is a huge difference between a first
edition book and its cheap copy, collectors being
well aware of that fact.
The experience brought on by book collecting
cannot be compared to anything else in the world.
There are those who say that the Internet will
quickly replace the need for books; they do not know
however the incredible number of book collectors out
there and neither their dedication for books. Book
collecting is not a competition about who owns more
books or who owns editions that are more beautiful;
it is a private pleasure and one that offers more
rewards than other passions. The entire process
represents the growth of a person as a human being
and it is incredible how much a person changes after
becoming a book collector. The thrill of adding a
new book to the existing library is intense and
finding the exact copy one wanted is a truly
rewarding experience.
Walking into a bookstore or used books store, you
will recognize book collectors in an instant. They
are the ones that take time to explore every aspect
of a book, including the covers, the binding and
certainly the content. They check if the book is a
first edition and they are prepared to pay important
sums of money to acquire it, knowing very well that
its value will increase over time. But you probably
know all that as a book collector. A book’s primary
purpose, though it may be to be read, also hold
other purposes and can be collected and kept for
many future generations to come. They symbolize one
of the most important ways of passing on
information; a bond between different populations
and cultures, something apart and yet truly unique.
In addition, if we are going to talk about first
editions, then you should that a first edition is
considered the original printing of the book. These
editions are highly valued by genuine collectors,
representing the closest connection to the author.
As there are many delightful aspects about book
collecting, it is quite hard to say which one is
most pleasing and entertaining. Creating a personal
library offers incredible rewards, allowing the book
collector to express his or her passions and
interests. That person may be a doctor and the
library will contain a complex set of books. That
person may be a scientist and the library will hold
plenty of research encyclopedias. Finally, that
person may be a writer and the library will contain
some of the greatest writers and their creations.
Books are a veritable reflection of how we think and
act, of our thoughts and feelings at the same time.
A well built library will not only express our
passion for book collecting but will allow us at the
same time to return in history whenever we feel
like, not to mention help us to get to the core of
the human existence. A home library can contain
books about mostly anything but an authentic book
collector will take care to organize the library on
categories, authors and titles. There have been many
records about personal libraries throughout times,
many great men leaving incredible collections and
impressing everyone with their interests. They
should be followed as an example and help book
collectors of all sorts discover all the collecting
possibilities they have nowadays.
One should not collect books for the sake of
collecting; this passion should be expressed in a
completely different way, that person reading the
books collected and keeping them close to his/her
heart. Book collecting may be a little influenced by
the appearance of the Internet technology and the
multitude of virtual books, but there are still a
lot of persons who love to collect books the
old-fashioned way. They are not attracted by the
potential of the new technology, enjoying the search
for rare collectables and adding them to their
collections. For such persons, it is not about the
money and certainly not about the fame. They are
book collectors as they have a genuine passion for
books and they value their collections up to the
highest limit possible, understanding how truly
unique each one is in its own way.
One of the main advantages brought by the Internet
technology was that book collecting suddenly became
a lot easier. Book collectors weren’t forced anymore
to search from bookstore to bookstore, from library
to library; having to browse through the Internet
for all those books, they were interested in. Today,
while the Internet continues to develop even more,
book collecting has become a hobby for a large
percent of the Internet users. They search through
virtual libraries for the books they are interesting
in, being especially attracted by the affordable
prices and the incredible variety offered. A book
collector can show and express his or her interest
in books without moving an inch from the front of
the computer, learning at the same time useful
information on how to build your own home library.
With the help of the Internet, they can understand
why powerful sunlight or extreme dust can hurt the
condition of a book, not to mention how to protect
books from moisture and increased heat. They are
taught to face any challenge as a book collector and
most importantly, they are taught how to be a
collector in its true sense.
