Passionate lawyers slash book collectors – high-quality researching

Have you ever entered a lawyer’s office? Of course you have. Who amongst us hasn’t? The truth is that we are bound to need a lawyer sooner or later, no matter the reason. But that is not the actual subject of this article. I bet that as soon as you entered the room, you were dazzled with the entire law-like atmosphere, observing the matching leather chairs and mahogany desk. You could not help admiring the wonderfully decorated office and watch attentively every detail. Perhaps your eyes stopped on many things but I am certain that the main point of focus was on the library behind or on the side of the room. How cool was it to see such a beautifully organized library?

Everyone knows that one of the most essential of an office décor is a well built library full of old law books. Who would have thought that lawyers and judges number among those who are into book collecting? In fact, these people have usually the same amount of books at home, being particularly interested in possessing rare and extremely valuable copies of various law books. They do not consider their offices to be complete without such collections and they are willing to pay incredible sums of money to obtain the books they want to add to their collection. And if you’ve ever seen the kind of library I’m talking about, then you have to agree with me. Just watching those attractively arranged books on wooden shelves makes you consider enrolling for law school!

If you take your time and browse through such a collection, you will discover that most of these old law books come in more volumes, being usually sold as a set. They still represent important reference sources and research documentation, even tough the Internet is gaining an incredible amount of popularity in that field. However that may be the case, an experienced and dedicated law attorney will always use for reference his/her backend library, as some of these books cannot be found on the Internet. Old law books that have been published a long time ago are well kept by their possessors and they are not likely to give them away as easily. This is why it is quite hard to find the books you are interested in as a lawyer. The copies might be rare and worth incredibly much, but even so their owners are not willing to part with them. There is a lot of effort and an extreme amount of time to be put in order to build a complete and complex law office library, filled with old law books.

One of the main aspects related to the collecting of old law books is represented by the fact that one should never purchase separate parts of a set, unless that person is completely and absolutely certain that there is no other way to obtain that book. Complete sets are incredibly valuable and they are regularly for unbelievable amounts of money. One should not let himself/herself tricked by petty merchants trying to sell a stolen book, belonging to a 12-set on criminal law. On the other hand, if that person has already acquired some books from that collection set, then there is no problem when it comes to purchasing the rest of the set. Book collecting is said to be a passion that doesn’t require incredible financial resources; however, that affirmation tends to take a slightly different turn in the case of collecting old law books. These are hard to find and when they are found, the buyer might be willing to pay more than they are actually worth, just because he/she managed to discover them.

A library filled with old law books gives chills not only to the owner (he/she is obviously thrilled with having gathered such an amazing collection) but also to everyone who sees it. Just imagine walking into a room and seeing an incredible library, with books arranged at the same level, with all the spines and bindings aligning. You could go through books regarding equity and other similar information, books containing annotated cases (both English and American), sales law, criminal law, bar questions, land rights, law conflicts and federal courts. All these books might not sound exciting for the untrained ear, but for a specialist they represent much more than a collection. Lawyers are deeply interested when it comes to having such old law books. They are in constant search for diverse volumes, being prepared to explore their book collecting hobby to the deepest level possible.

Let’s take the example of the book written by a certain Justin Miller on the subject of criminal law. How would you feel as a lawyer to add this book to your old law books collection? I bet you would feel pretty excited. Justin Miller wrote this book and gave it for publishing in the year of 1934. He was an extraordinary man, developing the foundation for criminal law and being one of the true experts in the field. His book written while he was the Dean of the School of Law has inspired many generations of lawyers throughout time, continuing to be an inspiration up to this day. Every lawyer should have a copy of Miller on Criminal Law in his library, just keeping in mind how great a criminal law expert was Justin Miller. He not only brought major changes for the law system but he also managed to remain in history for being one of the greatest criminal lawyers ever. His book is totally worth to be added to any collection of old law books and we have the Internet to thank for offering to us incredible access to such astonishing books.

And how about American and English Annotated Cases? In 1907, three men developed a 5-volume set upon the subject, not knowing how incredibly popular their book set was going to become. Containing a wide variety of commented cases, the book written by Greene, McKinney and Garland has proven to be one of the very first books to explore such interesting subjects. The book certainly represents another must have for any lawyer/book collector out there, especially since it is considered to have formed the basis for today’s American law system. It offers incredible research opportunities, having plenty of explanatory notes, critical comments and detailed reports. You cannot go wrong with adding such a book to a law book collection but you might want to be attentive to other significant writings as well. The main subjects were already mentioned in above paragraphs but you have to keep in mind just one thing. Old law books still represent important sources of information and they should never be disregarded in favor of the Internet. They are able to provide the kind of information you cannot find online and you can certainly benefit from having a library constituted of old law books. Show everyone your fantastic selection and prepare to win all the cases using them for advanced researching!
